Dr. Priscilla Acevedo, accompanying young people in providing medical care to patients at the San Jose Home in Panama, run by the Missionary Sisters of Charity of Calcutta.
Inspiring others is a beautiful thing that builds over time and effort.
I remember when I entered medical school and attended medical tours, I noticed that few doctors gave their time to this educational work, which is truly one of the first potential contacts medical students have with a real patient.
For this reason, I make it a rule to do everything possible to accompany them.
We always do helpful things (like writing prescriptions) with the idea of spending enough time with patients so they´ll keep coming back throughout their lives.
Thanks to Hogar San Jose, to allowed us to simulate a learning environment based on empathy and respect for life. The group was very diverse, from all religions, very interested in HELPING.
Even that same day, three dental students examined the patients, and we prepared referrals.
Let´s support these initiatives to have supportive healthcare team members.
